U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated the Ukrainian people with successful parliamentary elections and promised the Ukrainian authorities assistance in the return of the Crimea.

In a statement, Obama said: "On behalf of the American people, I congratulate the people of Ukraine on the implementation of successful parliamentary elections on 26 October. Despite the difficult situation in the sphere of security in some regions, millions of Ukrainians across the country came out to vote in an orderly and peaceful atmosphere. I thank the government of Ukraine for the campaign and election day, which the international organization of monitoring assessed as largely compliant with international standards".

Obama said that Russia, which occupied the Crimea, and the Pro-Russian rebels in the East of Ukraine did not allow many Ukrainian citizens to exercise their democratic right to participate in elections.

"I call on Russia to ensure that its authorised in Eastern Ukraine has allowed the voters in parts of Donetsk and Lugansk regions to elect their representatives to legitimate local elections on 7 December, in accordance with the agreement, which the representatives of Russia and the separatists signed in Minsk on 5 September. The United States does not recognize any elections in the separatist regions, which do not correspond to the legislation of Ukraine and did not take place in coordination and under the leadership of the Ukrainian government," he said.

Obama believes that the parliamentary elections on October 26, are another important step in the democratic development of Ukraine". "We look forward to the convening of the new Parliament and the rapid formation of a strong inclusive government. The United States stands ready to support the choice of the Ukrainian people and Ukraine's new government as it implements reforms necessary for the further democratic development, strengthening the rule of law and contribute to economic stability and growth in Ukraine", - said the American President.

In addition, he assured that the United States supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, because they are "working on peaceful settlement of the conflict in the East and the return of the Crimea".
