The Republican party of the United States for the first time in eight years gained control of both houses of Congress of the United States, officially taking the majority of seats in the Senate.

Newly elected and re-elected senators on Tuesday were sworn, reports Russian service Bi-bi-si.

In November the Republicans, already held the majority of seats in the house of representatives, managed to get a majority in the Senate.

In the new composition of Congress a record number of women, 104, they make up about a fifth of the total members of the legislative body. 96 seats in Congress (18%) will be members of the so-called ethnic minorities.
